Living the Liturgical Year Well: November, The Holy Souls in Purgatory

Featured image: All Souls Day, Joža Uprka (1861–1940), 1897 Grey is November… starts a poem by Elsa Beskow. And I often find that it is so, even if she wrote from Sweden. The liturgical year is, once again, so fitting in its dedication of the month of November. If the weather is grey, thinking about…

How the Books Moved In: The Story of Our Home Library

I love my home library! Every time someone walks into our home for the first time and they see the walls covered with books, their reaction is always the same: “Just what I expected!” And then they start perusing the shelves. And that makes me so very happy! I love sharing books with friends and…

My America: A Picture Book Exploration

When I discovered the book: My America: A Poetry Atlas of the United States by Lee Bennett Hopkins, illustrated by Stephen Alcorn, I could not resist! Poetry and geography blending harmoniously together? Say no more, I was sold. The rich texts of the poems, the stunning illustrations. This is a beautiful book that belongs on…

If You Give a Homesteader Elderberries and Pears…

This blog post is dedicated to Eddie T. for his love of all things jammy. First a neighbor gave me some elderberries, she does every year, and usually I use it for elderberry syrup. Then a co-worker of my husband’s gave him pears, before I had time to process the elderberries. No one in my…

Living the Liturgical Year Well: October, the Month of the Holy Rosary

Love the Madonna and pray the Rosary, for her Rosary is the weapon against the evils of the world today. All graces given by God pass through the Blessed Mother.St. Padre Pio. As I start this post on the eve of Padre Pio’s feast day this quote seems quite fitting. The month of October is…

A Daily Picture Book came into our homeschool this fall after a dear friend introduced it to me. I knew our picture book collection was lacking, so I was thrilled to hear about this subscription. Every month on the fifteenth, I get excited to see the new selections and immediately race to my library’s website to reserve as many as I can!

Not only have all my children (age 6-16) loved listening to these stories, but I’ve also learned so much myself—about both well-known figures and fascinating individuals I’d never heard of before. It’s truly become a lively and enriching family experience.

I’ve since started using the subscription in my homeschool group, Child of God Scholé. After lunch, the students gather around for a story, which transitions them beautifully into the afternoon’s learning. It’s the perfect way to reset and re-energize!

A Daily Picture Book has helped me simplify (and look forward to) our morning time. In the past, I have tried to do too much during this part of our school day. I am grateful to be able to not have to put the brainwork into deciding what to do. I simply pick the book selections we can do and any manageable craft/recipe selections for that day. Sometimes it ends up just being the book and that works too as my boys have really enjoyed the selections! It brings me peace of mind that the books are factually sound so if we miss other history, geography, etc. for the day, at least they've gotten a gem of knowledge from our morning time.
