Picture Book Exploration: The Night of Las Posadas, by Tomie dePaola

The Night of Las Posadas is one of our favorite Christmas picture books that we have turned into a tradition. We read it every year, on December 16th. We love the beautiful story of the miracle that might have taken place on a snowy December 16th near Santa Fe, New Mexico. Tradition This is a…

A Feast of Books: Saint Nicholas and Jolabokaflod

Jolabokaflod is a wonderful Icelandic tradition has recently made a grand entrance in our American literary world. The tradition is to give others books on Christmas Eve and to spend the evening reading, sipping hot cocoa and munching on cookies. Our Christmas Eve is too crazy for that, therefore we have started doing this on…

Happy new Liturgical Year to all my fellow Catholics! We are less than a week away from Advent and the beginning of a great liturgical season. It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Advent…

Advent and Christmas Picture Books and Traditions I always feel a little disgruntled that Thanksgiving and the first Sunday of Advent are the same weekend! It’s just so much goodness in such a short time! I always want to enjoy the last little bit of fall a little longer, but Thanksgiving is the death knell…

A Daily Picture Book came into our homeschool this fall after a dear friend introduced it to me. I knew our picture book collection was lacking, so I was thrilled to hear about this subscription. Every month on the fifteenth, I get excited to see the new selections and immediately race to my library’s website to reserve as many as I can!

Not only have all my children (age 6-16) loved listening to these stories, but I’ve also learned so much myself—about both well-known figures and fascinating individuals I’d never heard of before. It’s truly become a lively and enriching family experience.

I’ve since started using the subscription in my homeschool group, Child of God Scholé. After lunch, the students gather around for a story, which transitions them beautifully into the afternoon’s learning. It’s the perfect way to reset and re-energize!

A Daily Picture Book has helped me simplify (and look forward to) our morning time. In the past, I have tried to do too much during this part of our school day. I am grateful to be able to not have to put the brainwork into deciding what to do. I simply pick the book selections we can do and any manageable craft/recipe selections for that day. Sometimes it ends up just being the book and that works too as my boys have really enjoyed the selections! It brings me peace of mind that the books are factually sound so if we miss other history, geography, etc. for the day, at least they've gotten a gem of knowledge from our morning time.
