Lenten Watchfires: Mourning and Being Comforted Alongside Saint Peter

This week we will travel with Saint Peter, the head of the Apostles and the first Pope. What a great lenten companion Saint Peter will be! I have always found him so human and relatable, he is always putting his foot in it so to speak and brings me great consolation that there is hope…

Behind the Covers: All About Lent and Holy Week

Who else dreads Lent? It’s not the fasting, it might be the weather and time of year, but mainly it is making this time of penance come alive for my children. It is so easy to throw a party for a feast day or a solemnity and to bring the saint or the solemnity to…

Living the Liturgical Year Well: February, Dedicated to the Holy Family

This post is a reminder to download your Liturgical Board Printables! This is an updated post of a similar post from January of last year.  “ He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them” (Luke 2:51). Reflect on the holy life which Joseph led in the company of Jesus…

Keeping Company with Nature: Delighting in Nature Study

You have gone on a beautiful Nature Walk. You have managed to create an entry in your Nature Journal. And now you are home. What now? Do you just hang your satchel, put your Nature Journal away and forget all about it until next time? No, the party continues! Remember John Muir Laws’ advice? “…

The Art of The Nature Walk

“Just go on a Nature Walk!” We often hear this as the response to boredom and a stale homeschooling atmosphere. And there is great wisdom in that advice. Heading outside when things are not going well inside is the best advice ever for anyone, young or old, in any circumstance. But how does one go…

    Picture Book Exploration: Frank Zamboni

Today I feel a great affinity with Frank Zamboni, the inventor of the ice smoothing machine that bears his name. As I sit here in January, in Colorado, it is 60 degrees… Not quite the winter weather that prompts one to think of ice skating… But Zamboni built his ice machine in the heat of…

A Daily Picture Book came into our homeschool this fall after a dear friend introduced it to me. I knew our picture book collection was lacking, so I was thrilled to hear about this subscription. Every month on the fifteenth, I get excited to see the new selections and immediately race to my library’s website to reserve as many as I can!

Not only have all my children (age 6-16) loved listening to these stories, but I’ve also learned so much myself—about both well-known figures and fascinating individuals I’d never heard of before. It’s truly become a lively and enriching family experience.

I’ve since started using the subscription in my homeschool group, Child of God Scholé. After lunch, the students gather around for a story, which transitions them beautifully into the afternoon’s learning. It’s the perfect way to reset and re-energize!

A Daily Picture Book has helped me simplify (and look forward to) our morning time. In the past, I have tried to do too much during this part of our school day. I am grateful to be able to not have to put the brainwork into deciding what to do. I simply pick the book selections we can do and any manageable craft/recipe selections for that day. Sometimes it ends up just being the book and that works too as my boys have really enjoyed the selections! It brings me peace of mind that the books are factually sound so if we miss other history, geography, etc. for the day, at least they've gotten a gem of knowledge from our morning time.
