Our New Year at a Glance

“Chose promise, chose due”. Or: a promise is a promise. Our first week of home education is under our belt, the plans have been tweaked, and we are on our way. This year is very different for us than our previous years. First, I only have three students, gasp! That has not happened in about…

Shaping a Homeschool as Unique as the Family Who Lives It

I recently had a conversation with a friend that has made me think a lot over the last couple of weeks. My friend was one of the participants on a discussion panel at our local homeschool conference. She was to talk about homeschooling the elementary school age, I believe. She was addressing how each of…

Living the Liturgical Year Well: August and the Immaculate Heart of Mary

The month of August is dedicated to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Just as we prepare to resume our flurries of activities, the Church invites us to pause and recenter our lives close to the heart of our Mother Mary. The heart of a mother is a refuge to all of her children. A mother…

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Back to School, Part II

Guess what? I ended up having a whole evening with no one in the house! It never, ever happens. And it was wonderful! I was able to make quite a bit of progress in my school planning and now, let’s look at the more detailed process together. (This is Part II of a series, find…

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Back to School, Part I

I have a secret… The two real, honest to goodness reasons I homeschool is so that I can collect books and so that I can plan all kinds of fun learning experiences for my children. So at the end of the day it’s all pretty selfish, lol! But it is my favorite time of the…

Geography Tour of the USA: Pages and Places

Geography, and US Geography in particular, has been a hot topic on my homeschool group forum lately. And it is one that I am passionate about, so I figured we should discuss it a little. Let’s be honest no one really likes textbooks. Most of them are boring to read, especially if you try to…

An Old Gem: My Book House Books

On my latest trip to the thrift store I came upon a complete collection of the 12 books of My Book House for Children books. In perfect condition. For $30. And even though I already have the full set, I bought it. I could not leave it there when I knew so many friends could…

Picture Book Exploration: The Girl Who Named Pluto

Space has long been the last frontier, but who would have thought that a little English school girl, in the early 1920s, would be one of its chief explorers? Venetia Burney, born on July 11th, 1918, named a new planet that had just been discovered, at the age of 11. And that was enough to…

Bring a Book, Get a Book: A Picture Book Exchange

For the last couple of years, my homeschool group has been hosting a Christmas Picture Book Exchange. It has been lovely as well as a great success. I was thinking that summer time would be a wonderful time to do something similar. Here is a little “how to” for a summer picture book exchange, a…

A Daily Picture Book came into our homeschool this fall after a dear friend introduced it to me. I knew our picture book collection was lacking, so I was thrilled to hear about this subscription. Every month on the fifteenth, I get excited to see the new selections and immediately race to my library’s website to reserve as many as I can!

Not only have all my children (age 6-16) loved listening to these stories, but I’ve also learned so much myself—about both well-known figures and fascinating individuals I’d never heard of before. It’s truly become a lively and enriching family experience.

I’ve since started using the subscription in my homeschool group, Child of God Scholé. After lunch, the students gather around for a story, which transitions them beautifully into the afternoon’s learning. It’s the perfect way to reset and re-energize!

A Daily Picture Book has helped me simplify (and look forward to) our morning time. In the past, I have tried to do too much during this part of our school day. I am grateful to be able to not have to put the brainwork into deciding what to do. I simply pick the book selections we can do and any manageable craft/recipe selections for that day. Sometimes it ends up just being the book and that works too as my boys have really enjoyed the selections! It brings me peace of mind that the books are factually sound so if we miss other history, geography, etc. for the day, at least they've gotten a gem of knowledge from our morning time.
