    An Exciting Leafy Adventure

This blog post has a mind of its own, lol! First it was supposed to be all about fall picture books, then all about trees and now? Now it is a delightful nature adventure amongst leaves and leaf people. A mix of nature walk, nature journaling and arts and crafts, I have a feeling this…

Living the Liturgical Year Well: September – Our Lady of Sorrows

The month of September is dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows. It might seem a strange dedication for a month that contains both Our Lady’s birthday and the feast of her Holy Name. It is so easy to spend time contemplating the joy of Our Lady at the Nativity. But contemplating her sufferings? That is…

Powerful Picture Books About Work, Dreams, and Family

Labor Day honors the American worker and his effort to build the beautiful country that we enjoy now. I have gone through my library and selected a dozen or so picture books that are a beautiful testimony to the American worker. I tried to include a little bit of everything, from anonymous workers to better…

Picture Book Exploration: National Parks of the USA

In honor of the approaching 250th anniversary of the foundation of our country I am highlighting picture books relevant to our national identity and history. National Parks are a tremendous part of our identity. People around the world can recognize Old Faithful, El Capitan and many of our other landmarks. In truth, it was part…

Catholic Children’s Treasure Box: A First Catechism

This year with my preschooler we will be using the Catholic Children’s Treasure Box magazines for a gentle catechesis. I love using the Catholic Children Treasure Box books with my pre-schoolers and kindergartners.  These books are, like many older books, beautifully illustrated and written in graceful language. True living books. They are gentle but to…

    Morning Time Revisited

This new home education year has a lot of novelty for us, which is exciting as it is also my 19th year of homeschooling!! The biggest change is that I will not always be home and that my schedule is somewhat all over the place. Therefore I have had to streamline as well as reinforce…

A Daily Picture Book came into our homeschool this fall after a dear friend introduced it to me. I knew our picture book collection was lacking, so I was thrilled to hear about this subscription. Every month on the fifteenth, I get excited to see the new selections and immediately race to my library’s website to reserve as many as I can!

Not only have all my children (age 6-16) loved listening to these stories, but I’ve also learned so much myself—about both well-known figures and fascinating individuals I’d never heard of before. It’s truly become a lively and enriching family experience.

I’ve since started using the subscription in my homeschool group, Child of God Scholé. After lunch, the students gather around for a story, which transitions them beautifully into the afternoon’s learning. It’s the perfect way to reset and re-energize!

A Daily Picture Book has helped me simplify (and look forward to) our morning time. In the past, I have tried to do too much during this part of our school day. I am grateful to be able to not have to put the brainwork into deciding what to do. I simply pick the book selections we can do and any manageable craft/recipe selections for that day. Sometimes it ends up just being the book and that works too as my boys have really enjoyed the selections! It brings me peace of mind that the books are factually sound so if we miss other history, geography, etc. for the day, at least they've gotten a gem of knowledge from our morning time.
