Creating a Treasure: The Poetry Notebook

A Poetry Notebook is a treasure. I have such fond memories of my poetry notebooks growing up and even more especially of my mother’s old school ones. One day in the attic of our barn (where I was not supposed to be) I opened a box filled with notebooks, they looked pretty and definitely intriguing….

    Lapbooks: An Exciting Adventure!

Another engaging endeavor for the whole family is lapbooks. When we occasionally get into a slump with Notebooking, we switch gear and start creating all together through lapbooking. We discovered lapbooking a long, long time ago, it was probably our first method of Notebooking now that I think about it. I enjoy it because it…

Living the Liturgical Year Well: February, Dedicated to the Holy Family

“ He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was subject to them” (Luke 2:51). Reflect on the holy life which Joseph led in the company of Jesus and Mary. In that family there was no business except that which tended to the greater Glory of God; There were no thoughts or desires…

    Mama’s Magic: Poetry Tea Time

One of our very favorite activities, that we don’t do enough of, is Poetry Tea Time. Poetry Tea Time is a wonderful way to slow down, enjoy time together without being focused on academics while still learning. It is exactly what it sounds like: a drink, a snack and, of course, picture books. It has…

The Engineering Process: A Great Way to Learn Problem Solving

What is the engineering process and why should my children know about it? There is a short answer to that and a long one. Today is Raye Montague’s birthday! Happy birthday Raye! Raye Montague was a mathematician and an engineer. She was the first person to ever design a Navy ship via a computer. She…

Book Exploration: Roget and His Thesaurus, Just the Right Word

Today is Peter Mark Roget’s birthday! He loved words, and he loved lists, so much so that his love changed the English language! The history of the first thesaurus and its author is quite fascinating! It took a man with a love for precision and with a desire to use just the right word for…

Yippee! We Are Off to the Stock Show!

The National Western Stock Show is a big deal in the Denver area every January, since 1906! It is two weeks dedicated to anything and everything ranching and farming. The true spirit of the cowboy is strong and well alive during this time. It reminds us that Colorado is still the center of the West…

A Daily Picture Book came into our homeschool this fall after a dear friend introduced it to me. I knew our picture book collection was lacking, so I was thrilled to hear about this subscription. Every month on the fifteenth, I get excited to see the new selections and immediately race to my library’s website to reserve as many as I can!

Not only have all my children (age 6-16) loved listening to these stories, but I’ve also learned so much myself—about both well-known figures and fascinating individuals I’d never heard of before. It’s truly become a lively and enriching family experience.

I’ve since started using the subscription in my homeschool group, Child of God Scholé. After lunch, the students gather around for a story, which transitions them beautifully into the afternoon’s learning. It’s the perfect way to reset and re-energize!

A Daily Picture Book has helped me simplify (and look forward to) our morning time. In the past, I have tried to do too much during this part of our school day. I am grateful to be able to not have to put the brainwork into deciding what to do. I simply pick the book selections we can do and any manageable craft/recipe selections for that day. Sometimes it ends up just being the book and that works too as my boys have really enjoyed the selections! It brings me peace of mind that the books are factually sound so if we miss other history, geography, etc. for the day, at least they've gotten a gem of knowledge from our morning time.
