    Giving Thanks and Thanksgiving Booklist

Thanksgiving is my favorite American holiday. As an emigrant from a country who does not take the time to stop and give thanks where thanks are due, I have a particular appreciation for this day. I love that it is in the middle of the week, I love to be able to start with Mass,…

Geography: Igniter of Wonder and Imagination

Geography is something that I have always enjoyed and appreciated. Map-making and map-reading have something so mysterious and magical about them. They can, literally, take you anywhere. At  A Daily Picture Book, we practice both map-reading and cartography regularly. Right now my girls and I are working on a map of the USA over a…

    Awakening and Cultivating Imagination

Imagination… It is such a treasure for our children. How do we awaken it and nourish it? How do we help them discover this inner wonder that they carry with them? There are so many ways to awaken our little ones imagination, but there are also so many ways for it to be stolen away…

    Picture Books and Family History

With All Souls Day (or Dia de Los Muertos) approaching on November 2nd, it brings to mind picture books that impart family history. For many of us November is a time to remember family members that have died. And as we talk about them, we tell their stories so that they may be remembered by…

    A Little School Check-in

Hello,  I thought I’d pop in here with a little home education update. We’ve been back at our learning since the beginning of August, and it has been a wonderful start of the year. I only have 3 students for the first time in a very long time! I started with my 3 oldests when…

Fall is my favorite season. I just love this time of year, fall picture books are so cozy and Nature Study is at its best. I love the colors, the smells, the change in weather. It’s the best time for flannel shirts, jeans and boots, my all time favorite. Fall brings so many changes to…

Presenting: Cottage Tales, a Mother-Daughter Book Club

A little while back a dear friend came to me with an interesting project: Could I create a mother-daughter book club, similar to The Well-Read Mom, but using picture books? What an interesting project this has been! Cottage Tales From this request was born Cottage Tales, a mother-daughter monthly book club based on picture books….

    Not Just for Homeschoolers

A Daily Picture Book came into our homeschool this fall after a dear friend introduced it to me. I knew our picture book collection was lacking, so I was thrilled to hear about this subscription. Every month on the fifteenth, I get excited to see the new selections and immediately race to my library’s website to reserve as many as I can!

Not only have all my children (age 6-16) loved listening to these stories, but I’ve also learned so much myself—about both well-known figures and fascinating individuals I’d never heard of before. It’s truly become a lively and enriching family experience.

I’ve since started using the subscription in my homeschool group, Child of God Scholé. After lunch, the students gather around for a story, which transitions them beautifully into the afternoon’s learning. It’s the perfect way to reset and re-energize!

A Daily Picture Book has helped me simplify (and look forward to) our morning time. In the past, I have tried to do too much during this part of our school day. I am grateful to be able to not have to put the brainwork into deciding what to do. I simply pick the book selections we can do and any manageable craft/recipe selections for that day. Sometimes it ends up just being the book and that works too as my boys have really enjoyed the selections! It brings me peace of mind that the books are factually sound so if we miss other history, geography, etc. for the day, at least they've gotten a gem of knowledge from our morning time.
