    A Fourth of July Story

Happy Fourth of July! This is a special holiday for me. As an immigrant I was given the opportunity to choose, to really choose to become an American. It is not a right that I take for granted, nor a country that I take for granted. I did not come here because I was persecuted…

Jérôme Lejeune: The Pediatrician Who Uncovered Trisomy 21

Today, June 13th is Jérôme Lejeune’s birthday. I have known of him and heard his name my entire life. But I had never known what an amazing man he was. It was one of those household names growing up that I heard regularly, was familiar with but I had no idea who he actually was….

Hike It! A Summer Adventure in Picture Book

On a random day, as I was walking through the library, I caught something from the corner of my eye. It was an oversized picture book. It was reddish and blue with mountains and a family on the front cover. As I approached closer the title emerged and I knew in my book lover’s heart…

    A Sauntering Summer, Part 1

Summer is here! What is the most common question homeschoolers ask each other at this time of year?: “Are you done for the year?” The answers vary from “just one more week” to “no, we will keep going through the summer”. Why is this question so popular? Because, most of us are tired by the time…

Pentecost and the Beginning of the Church: A Lapbook Study

Pentecost and the birthday of the Church is next week, on June 8th! It is always a great celebration here and a perfect opportunity to review the historical foundation of our Church. Back in late March, as I was working on the Liturgical Year post for April, I mentioned that I would like to create…

A Daily Picture Book came into our homeschool this fall after a dear friend introduced it to me. I knew our picture book collection was lacking, so I was thrilled to hear about this subscription. Every month on the fifteenth, I get excited to see the new selections and immediately race to my library’s website to reserve as many as I can!

Not only have all my children (age 6-16) loved listening to these stories, but I’ve also learned so much myself—about both well-known figures and fascinating individuals I’d never heard of before. It’s truly become a lively and enriching family experience.

I’ve since started using the subscription in my homeschool group, Child of God Scholé. After lunch, the students gather around for a story, which transitions them beautifully into the afternoon’s learning. It’s the perfect way to reset and re-energize!

A Daily Picture Book has helped me simplify (and look forward to) our morning time. In the past, I have tried to do too much during this part of our school day. I am grateful to be able to not have to put the brainwork into deciding what to do. I simply pick the book selections we can do and any manageable craft/recipe selections for that day. Sometimes it ends up just being the book and that works too as my boys have really enjoyed the selections! It brings me peace of mind that the books are factually sound so if we miss other history, geography, etc. for the day, at least they've gotten a gem of knowledge from our morning time.
