Living the Liturgical Year Well: The Month of the Sacred Heart

The roses are in full bloom, the heat is here, it is June. June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, allowing us to nestle in his Love and Mercy. It is a busy month and liturgically rich in feasts and solemnities. To me, the feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist…

In Memoria: How to Honor our Fallen Soldiers

An America250 post Memorial Day announces the beginning of summer. It is like the opening parenthesis of this time when life is different. Where we slow down, we put the important first rather than the busyness of life. But do we actually acknowledge Memorial Day for what it is? Not just the opening of summer…

Leisurely Learning Through the Summer with A Daily Picture Book

The June booklists are here! June and summer are just around the corner. Often it conjures thoughts of a care free life where book learning is left behind. And when you attend a traditional school that is still true in the sense that you no longer have to be present in the school building. But…

Breathing Life in our Home Education Through Narration

Narration… The leitmotif of a Charlotte Mason education. What is narration and how do you do it? Narration is the hinge on which the learning is acquired. It is the key to making what is studied “my own”. Narration can seem daunting and a chore but truly it is the best learning tool in my…

Whole Subject Learning: The Secret to Sanity and Developing a Love of Learning

Family style learning enables us to streamline our learning experiences without diluting them. It has opened my eyes to other “school habits” that many homeschoolers fall prey to and that inhibit a profound learning experience. Just like school segregates children by age, it also segregates learning by subjects. As much as I understand the practical…

From the Death of a Pope to Habemus Papam

Pope Francis died on Easter Monday, April 21st, 2025. What happens now?For those of us who are still labeled the John Paul II generation, it will be the third time that we see a new pope elected. As I was reflecting on this with my husband we were saying how strange it is that our…

Living the Liturgical Year Well: May, the Month of Mary

May is such a lovely month! Flowers are everywhere, you can hear bird songs so early in the morning, the grass is green. It is just a lovely month. And to make it even better the Church has dedicated it to our mother, Mary. Several Marian Feasts are in May and many great saints are…

A Family that Learns Together Sticks Together

Home education should be a family affair, right? I mean you are at home, you are all together, so why should education be segregated? I am a huge proponent of a family learning as a family. By that I mean that it is so much nicer when we are all learning the same thing at…

A Daily Picture Book came into our homeschool this fall after a dear friend introduced it to me. I knew our picture book collection was lacking, so I was thrilled to hear about this subscription. Every month on the fifteenth, I get excited to see the new selections and immediately race to my library’s website to reserve as many as I can!

Not only have all my children (age 6-16) loved listening to these stories, but I’ve also learned so much myself—about both well-known figures and fascinating individuals I’d never heard of before. It’s truly become a lively and enriching family experience.

I’ve since started using the subscription in my homeschool group, Child of God Scholé. After lunch, the students gather around for a story, which transitions them beautifully into the afternoon’s learning. It’s the perfect way to reset and re-energize!

A Daily Picture Book has helped me simplify (and look forward to) our morning time. In the past, I have tried to do too much during this part of our school day. I am grateful to be able to not have to put the brainwork into deciding what to do. I simply pick the book selections we can do and any manageable craft/recipe selections for that day. Sometimes it ends up just being the book and that works too as my boys have really enjoyed the selections! It brings me peace of mind that the books are factually sound so if we miss other history, geography, etc. for the day, at least they've gotten a gem of knowledge from our morning time.
